Abstract

Many people from various communities still do not understand the value of tempeh as a healthy food item. Therefore, to improve the public knowledge about the nutritional values of tempeh, Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia chose the community of Bhayangkari women from Ranting, Kelapa Dua, Depok, as the target partners in the community service program. This community, which consisted of housewives of police officers, was considered the right target because they had the role of providing healthy food for their families. In addition to providing knowledge about the importance of consuming tempeh as healthy food, the team also trained the community to produce hygienic tempeh. The activities included three stages, i.e., preparation, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation. The program preparation involved the registration of the participants, the preparation of the seminar materials, and the procurement of materials and tools for the tempeh production. Next, the implementation stage consisted of education and training activities conducted via WhatsApp (WA) and Zoom meetings. Finally, the monitoring and evaluation stage was conducted via WA to assess the tempeh production process. Through this community service program, it is evident that all the participants could be trained on how to make hygienic tempeh easily. The guidelines to produce tempeh were also easy to understand and readily available for public use. Overall, the participants became more aware of the health benefits of tempeh.

Abstract

Metabolic syndrome is typically characterized by hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and obesity—all of which can contribute to a higher risk of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Mounting evidence also shows how metabolic syndrome may lead to worsening symptoms in covid-19 patients, thus resulting in more fatal cases. Therefore, what is urgently needed is the efforts to improve public awareness of the adverse effects of metabolic syndrome on covid-19 patients and the importance of health protocols against covid-19 transmission. An online seminar via zoom was held to support the fight against the covid-19 pandemic among the urban communities, which were chosen due to the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in these communities. The two-hour online counseling was also held to commemorate World Pharmacist Day, which fell on September 26, 2020. The responses to the questionnaire revealed that the majority of participants had a better understanding of the metabolic syndrome, its risks, its detrimental influence on the conditions of covid-19 patients, and the efforts to prevent Covid-19 transmissions. The seminar is expected to contribute to the government’s efforts to bolster the community’s awareness of the importance of health protocols

Abstract

Hand sanitizer could help clean one’s hands from germs and viruses, and thus, in a location where no handwashing is available, they could use hand sanitizer to clean their hands. Making hand sanitizer is very simple, and we could use plants found in one’s garden or yard. Limes and betels thrive in the garden owned by the Women's Farmer Group in Mojorejo Village, Jetis, Ponorogo Regency. These plants can be used to make hand sanitizer. However, the members of KWT had not known how to process them into hand sanitizer. This activity aimed to provide training for making hand sanitizer using natural ingredients picked from the KWT’s garden. As an alternative, we also trained the members of KWT about how to make hand sanitizer from artificial ingredients. We employed Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) method, which involves eight members of KWK in the village. We held an FGD to find the resources they had, and during the training, we demonstrated the procedures for making hand sanitizer. After the training, we also provided one-onone mentoring in making hand sanitizer. They made several kinds of hand sanitizer using natural and artificial ingredients. We interviewed two members of KWT after the training. They claimed that this activity had increased their knowledge about how to make use of the natural ingredients found in the garden, and that by making hand sanitizer by themselves, they could reduce their expenses.

Abstract

One problem faced by the community in Sukamakmur Village, Ajung District, East Java, is that its youth groups do not have a program to improve the community welfare. Another issue is the lack of public knowledge regarding the use of potential resources, including water resources. The newly established BUMDes and youth organization seem not to have any business programs, which has become an obstacle to the efforts to improve the welfare of the rural community. To address these problems, a community service program was conducted to assist the youth groups, karang taruna, by empowering them and developing agro-sociopreneurship. Given the abundant water resources, they can be used to apply the biofloc technology for catfish farming. The activities in the program included needs analysis using the ABCD analysis of the FGD sessions, education on agrosociopreneurship, training, monitoring, and evaluation. The result showed that through the agrosociopreneurship mentorship, (i) as many as 33% of karang taruna members and livestock farmers attempted to engage in agro-sociopreneurship and (ii) livestock farmers have been able to apply biofloc technology in catfish farming.

Abstract

Public awareness and concern about greening and healthy lifestyles in preserving the environment and improving health status are crucial despite the covid-19 pandemic. One approach to deal with this issue is by spreading the information and taking promotive actions which aim to increase public awareness of the importance of greening and healthy lifestyles in their daily lives. Various online educational activities for communities are needed to increase their knowledge and concern. In this regard, the Daerah Binaan (DABIN) unit and the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia held a SEHATI challenge and an educational seminar "Evergreen: Go Green, Go Healthy." One of the topics raised through this online seminar was "Urban Farming in the Pandemic Period: Economical and Ecological," which discusses various benefits of growing hydroponic vegetables. In addition, the topic of promoting a healthy lifestyle includes the proper processing of fresh vegetables to avoid parasitic contamination and a healthy breakfast with the consumption of probiotics. As many as nine and 198 people attended the challenge competition and seminar. A pre-test and a post-test were held before and after the seminar to determine the participants' knowledge. The result showed that the participants' knowledge increased between 15% to 38%. The efforts to deliver periodic education about greening and healthy lifestyles action will continue to be carried out by DABIN and HACCP. These efforts aim to improve public awareness about the importance of this topic, reduce global warming, and improve the health status of an area.

Abstract

The livestock farming system of sumba ongole cattle that people in Wunga Village, Haharu District, East Sumba Regency, commonly practice is the extensive system. In this system, sumba ongole cattle are released during the day to graze on natural grazing fields and put back into their pens at night. However, the quality of the pasture during the dry season tends to be very poor, characterized by high crude fiber content and low crude protein content. This condition can cause a nutritional deficiency in the livestock. Therefore, there have been some efforts to meet the nutritional needs of the livestock by providing supplementary feed in the form of a multi-nutrient block (MnB). This community service aims to provide training on how to produce multi-nutrient block as additional supplementation for the sumba ongole cattle, targeted at the Parengu Wunga farmer community (KO MANUNGGA) in Wunga Village, Haharu District, East Sumba Regency as the work partner. The program consisted of several activities, such as lectures, question and answer sessions, discussion, simulation, and practice. These activities were carried out in several stages, namely the survey, the provision of tools and materials, training and mentoring, the feeding of the livestock, and evaluation. The results showed that the livestock farmers in Wunga Village learned about the formulation of a multi-nutrient block, the manufacturing of the multi-nutrient block using local feed ingredients, and the ways to feed the multi-nutrient block to the livestock. It is also revealed that feeding the multi-nutrient block to the sumba ongole cattle can increase their appetite and lead to a high body condition score in the dry season.

Abstract

Stunting has been a problem in Sendoyan Village, with its prevalence rate exceeding 30%. Nevertheless, handling stunting is not easy in that it requires an integrated approach, including how to increase the knowledge of mothers and families about stunting. This community service aimed to enhance the knowledge of mothers with stunted children regarding their parental roles and the proper disposal of feces. The program commenced with initial surveys and counseling at the posyandu (pos pelayanan terpadu), followed by several home visits involving health cadres. The preliminary findings showed that mothers with stunted toddlers were not able to choose the proper food for their toddlers and that there were still families who did not defecate in proper places. The counseling at the posyandu appeared to benefit the participating mothers even though they had to juggle with their responsibility of caring for their toddlers. Accordingly, the home visits, when conducted properly, could be an effective way to deliver the knowledge to the mothers. The public health centers (puskesmas) should also equip the health cadres with sufficient knowledge in childcare, making them ready to transfer the knowledge in stunting prevention to the mothers.

Abstract

Roasted peanuts typically have a unique taste with a distinctive roasted aroma and a savory flavor different from peanuts processed using an oven. To make roasted peanuts, two critical stages should be observed: the sanitation during washing and the roasting technology. The current study focuses on the application of roasting technology in the production of roasted peanuts among the households in Keranggan Village, Setu District, South Tangerang City. It was an issue that the household scale manufacturing of roasted peanuts there did not meet the standard process, relying on manpower to monitor when the roasting process should end even though fatigued workers may produce burnt peanuts up to 19%. Therefore, to reduce the percentage of burnt peanuts, a semi-mechanical roasted fryer was developed for the roasted peanut entrepreneurs in Keranggan Village, Setu District, South Tangerang City. The research team conducted socialization of effective roasting technology, provided assistance, and delivered the semi-mechanical roasters to the community. The team also performed a direct test on the semi-mechanical roaster at both the Indonesian Institute of Technology laboratory and Keranggan Village, in addition to providing assistance on how to use the tool. The semi-mechanical roaster itself is made of stainless steel with a diameter of 100 cm, equipped with a stirrer powered by an electric motor capable of roasting automatically within a certain time limit. This will produce a homogeneous heat transfer with the sand media, which is not changed in line with the original roasting method. The lab and field trials showed that the burnt yield decreased to 5%. Furthermore, when compared to those produced through manual roasting, the sensory test of the products, showed results that were not significantly different even with a sensory value of appearance (i.e., the color) higher than that of manual roasting.

Abstract

SDN Kedungmlati is the only public elementary school in Kedungmlati village. The school lacks the infrastructure to support the teaching and learning process. They do not have adequate teaching aids to help the students learn abstract concepts in mathematics. We carried out this community service to introduce the PERIODIK teaching aid to respond to their needs. PERIODIK teaching aids are aids in learning basic mathematical operations, which include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of integers. This activity, conducted in the academic year of 2019/2020, aimed to increase the students' soft skills in using the PERIODIK teaching aid and thus develop their understanding of basic mathematical operations. The soft skills we expected the students to gain include the skills to use the teaching aid, be persistent, and be able to cooperate with others. This activity was carried out in three stages: preparation, implementation, and reporting, and evaluated using two instruments: a questionnaire and a written test. The questionnaire was distributed to the students before and after the training, whereas the written test was conducted only at the end of the activity. We used paired samples t-test to measure the students’ soft skills and independent samples t-test to examine whether the students had reached achieved the minimum score of 80. The results show that teaching aids can improve students' soft skills and understanding of the four basic mathematical operations. The PERIODIK then became an inventory of SDN Kedungmlati for learning mathematics.
